Xiaomi Scooter Brake Pads: Which Size Fits Yours?
Brake pads are the cheapest part on your Xiaomi scooter and the one you least want to get wrong. They're also the part people most often order twice — because the model name printed on the stem is not enough to tell you which pad you need.
Xiaomi is the worst offender for this, so that's what this guide covers: Pro, 1S, Pro 2, Essential and Mi 3. Here's how to get it right the first time.
Why your model name isn't enough
Two Xiaomi scooters of the same model, bought a year apart, can take different pads. Retailers across Europe list both an 18.6 mm and a 21 mm pad for the same lineup — Pro, 1S, Pro 2, Essential — because Xiaomi changed the caliper partway through production. The change is commonly reported as a V1/V2 split around the middle of 2019.
On top of that, the standard M365 line and the Pro line use different calipers altogether, which is why they're sold as separate parts rather than one universal pad.
So there are three things that actually determine fitment, and only one of them is the model name:
- Pad diameter — commonly 18.6 mm or 21 mm on the Xiaomi platform
- Pad shape — tabbed pads and fully round pads are not interchangeable, even at the same diameter
- Model family — the Mi 3 and the Pro/1S line are different parts
Measure yours — it takes two minutes
Don't order from the model name. Pull the old pad and measure it:
- Find the retaining pin on the caliper and pull it out. It's usually a small split pin or clip.
- Lift the old pads out through the top with needle-nose pliers.
- Measure the friction surface across its widest point with calipers or a ruler.
- Note the shape — does it have a tab or ear sticking off the backing plate, or is it a plain circle?
Photograph the pad next to the ruler before you order. If it turns out to be wrong, you'll have the evidence to sort it out quickly.
Semi-metallic vs organic: which compound?
Semi-metallic (sometimes sold as sintered) pads use metal particles in the friction material. They handle heat better, hold up to repeated hard stops, and last longer. The trade is a little more noise when cold and slightly more rotor wear over time.
Organic pads are softer, quieter, and bite well when cold — but they fade faster on long descents and wear out sooner.
For a scooter carrying an adult at 15–25 mph in stop-and-go traffic, semi-metallic is the sensible default, and it's what we stock.
What we carry
Both sets below are semi-metallic and sold as a pair — two pads, one full set for a single caliper.
Being straight with you: the Pro/1S/Pro2/Essential set above is the 21 mm version. If you measure yours and it comes out at 18.6 mm, this isn't your pad and we don't currently stock that size. Better you know now than after it arrives.
When do pads actually need replacing?
The reliable signals, roughly in order of urgency:
- Grinding or scraping metal-on-metal. Stop riding. The friction material is gone and you're cutting into the rotor with the backing plate.
- Friction material worn down close to the metal backing plate. Compare against a new pad — that's the easiest reference you'll get.
- The lever pulls much closer to the grip than it used to, even after adjusting the cable.
- Noticeably longer stopping distance, or the brake fading on a long downhill.
- Contamination — oil, chain lube or brake cleaner on the pad face. Contaminated pads don't recover; replace them.
- Uneven wear between the two pads, which usually points at a sticking caliper rather than the pads themselves.
When the pad isn't the problem
If you've fitted new pads and braking is still poor, or you feel a pulsing through the lever with each wheel rotation, the rotor is the suspect. Warped, scored, or worn-thin rotors won't be fixed by fresh pads.
Most electric scooters use a 140 mm rotor with a 6-hole mounting pattern — it's close to a standard across the category. Count the bolt holes and measure the rotor diameter before ordering. Mounting screws aren't included — reuse your originals if they're in good shape.
Bed in your new pads before you trust them
New pads don't work at full strength straight out of the packet. The friction surfaces need to mate to the rotor first, and until they do, your stopping distance is longer than you expect.
Bed them in on a quiet, flat stretch: bring the scooter up to a moderate speed and brake firmly to walking pace, without locking the wheel. Repeat eight to ten times, letting the brake cool for a few seconds between each. You'll feel the bite sharpen as you go.
Safety notes
- Don't breathe brake dust. Wear a dust mask when cleaning a caliper, and never blow one out with compressed air — it puts the dust straight into the air you're standing in.
- Keep oil, grease and lubricant off the pad faces and the rotor. Clean the rotor with isopropyl alcohol, not a general-purpose lubricant spray.
- Replace pads as a pair, never one side only.
- Check the wheel spins freely and the lever feels firm — not spongy — before your first ride.
- Brakes are the one repair not to improvise on. If something doesn't seat right, stop and sort it before riding.
