Solid vs Pneumatic Scooter Tires: Which Should You Ride?

Your scooter came with one kind of tire. When it finally wears out — or you get that first flat two miles from home — you get to choose again. And the two options ride completely differently.

Here's how to decide, plus the one mistake that makes riders spend three times more than they need to.

The short answer

  • You ride mostly smooth pavement and never want to deal with a flat again → go solid.
  • Your roads are cracked, patched, or full of potholes, and you care about comfort and range → stay pneumatic.
  • You have a flat right now and the rubber still looks fine → you probably need a $5.99 inner tube, not a new tire. More on that below.

How pneumatic tires work

The Ninebot F-series runs a tube-type setup: a rubber outer tire plus a separate inner tube that holds the air. The air is what does the cushioning — the tire itself is mostly there to provide tread and protect the tube.

What's good about them:

  • Ride comfort. Air compresses. Every expansion joint, sidewalk lip and bad patch gets softened before it reaches the deck and your hands.
  • Grip. The tire deforms slightly to follow the road surface, which means a bigger contact patch — noticeably better in the wet.
  • Range. Lower rolling resistance than solid rubber, so you squeeze a bit more distance out of the same battery.
  • Cheap repairs. A puncture usually means a new tube, and tubes cost a fraction of a tire.
  • Easy to mount. A deflated tire slips over the rim without much of a fight.

What's not:

  • They go flat. Glass, staples, screws, thorns — all of it is a threat.
  • They need attention. Underinflated tires ride badly, wear unevenly and pinch-flat easily.
  • A flat far from home means either a roadside repair or a long walk.

How solid (airless) tires work

A solid tire is one piece of molded rubber, often with honeycomb voids or channels through the middle to give back a little of the cushioning that air used to provide. There is no tube and no air. There is nothing to puncture.

What's good about them:

  • They cannot go flat. That's the whole pitch, and it's a real one.
  • Zero maintenance. No pressure checks, no pump, no valve stems to snap off.
  • Great for debris. If you commute past construction, broken glass or industrial areas, this is the tire that stops ruining your week.

What's not:

  • The ride is harder. This is the trade, and it's not subtle. Rough pavement transmits straight through to the deck and the handlebars.
  • Slightly less range. More rolling resistance means the motor works a little harder for the same distance.
  • Heavier. Noticeable if you carry your scooter up stairs or onto a train.
  • Installation is a genuine fight. See below — this catches people out.

The mistake that costs riders money

When a pneumatic tire loses air, most people assume the tire is finished and buy a new one. Usually it isn't.

On a tube-type wheel, the air is held by the tube, not the tire. If your tread still has depth, the sidewall isn't cracked, and there's no cut or embedded object in the rubber, the tire is fine — the tube is what failed. You're replacing the cheap part, not the expensive one.

Buy a new outer tire when the tread is worn smooth, the sidewall is cracked or dry-rotted, you can see cord or fabric through the rubber, or there's a cut big enough for a new tube to bulge through. Otherwise, tube.

It's also worth keeping a spare tube on the shelf regardless of which route you go — it turns a ruined afternoon into a twenty-minute job.

When it's time to replace

  • Tread worn smooth, especially the center strip where a scooter does most of its wear
  • Cracks in the sidewall, or rubber that's gone hard and shiny with age
  • Cord or fabric visible through the surface
  • Chunks missing, or a cut you can fit a fingernail into
  • Repeated flats in the same tire — often a sharp object still embedded in the casing
  • On solids: flat spots, or the honeycomb voids visibly collapsed

Before you buy a solid tire, read this

Solid tires are hard to install. Not "mildly annoying" — properly hard. There's no deflating them to make the bead slip over the rim, so you're stretching stiff rubber over a metal edge with tire levers and a lot of patience.

Warming the tire in the sun or in warm water first makes the rubber more willing. Soapy water on the rim helps it slide. Work in small sections and keep the part you've already seated pushed down into the center channel of the rim so you're not fighting the whole circumference at once.

Plan on it taking a while the first time. If that sounds like a bad afternoon, pneumatic is the honest recommendation — and there's no shame in it.

Safety notes

  • Inflate pneumatic tires to the pressure printed on the sidewall or listed in your scooter's manual. Guessing high risks a blowout; guessing low causes pinch flats and uneven wear.
  • Power the scooter off before removing a wheel, and take note of how brake and motor cables are routed before you disturb them.
  • Check that the wheel spins freely and the brake still bites properly before your first ride after any tire work.
